Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
