Ex-president Trump has once again declared he would urge FIFA to pull global soccer tournament events from a venue based on that city's politics, with Massachusetts now being the most recent such city to receive such threats from the US president. Additionally, Trump suggested he would consider comparable measures against Southern California for the upcoming Olympic Games due to possible security concerns.

Official Power and Informal Leverage

While Trump holds no official jurisdiction to unilaterally remove either tournament, he is able to lobby the respective governing bodies overseeing each event to shift locations.

Context of Remarks

These comments were made during a press event with Argentinian president Milei, who was visiting the presidential residence following the disclosure of a massive bailout for the Latin American country. At the end of the meeting, a media member asked Trump about a recent public disturbance in the city where law enforcement were assaulted and a patrol car was ignited. The journalist also questioned if the situation could cause the loss of tournament responsibilities for the larger World Cup.

“We could take them away,” he stated about the World Cup fixtures, scheduled to be held at Gillette Stadium. “She is poor … they're extremist, and they are dominating areas of downtown. That’s a pretty big statement, right?”

Public Gatherings and Political Context

Unauthorized gatherings, a digitally organized phenomenon where participants assemble on urban roads after dark to perform stunts, have emerged as a ongoing nuisance in American cities since the lockdown restrictions. Recent such gatherings have escalated into violence in the state, including Boston. Yet, these occurrences are generally not regarded as linked to any distinct ideological group.

“When a mayor is performing poorly, and I perceive there are unsafe conditions, I'd call the organization's president, who is phenomenal, and suggest let’s move it to an alternate venue,” he stated during the event. “He'd do that. He wouldn’t love doing it, but he would comply. Readily, he would.”

Organizational Alignment

The organization's head has publicly acknowledged his efforts to be closely connected with the US leader prior to next year’s tournament, set to be organized in 11 cities across the US along with two in Canada and multiple in Mexico. The head has appeared at multiple presidential events, had Trump hand over the club tournament cup after the championship match, and has even postponed his own organization’s congress to accompany Trump on a trip to the Middle East previously.

Past Statements

Nevertheless, Trump from warning about the removal of FIFA World Cup events from different locations. In late September, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis were comparable statements, with Trump asserting both locations were “run by far-left extremists who don’t know what they're managing,” while criticizing the safety level of both areas and claiming that games could be shifted.

FIFA Response

FIFA vice-president Montagliani dismissed Trump’s assertions when he commented afterward at a conference in England.

“It’s FIFA’s tournament, FIFA’s jurisdiction, the organization determines such choices,” Montagliani stated. “Respectfully to current world leaders, football is more important than them and football will outlast their regime and their policies. It's the essence of our game, that it is bigger than any individual and bigger than individual states.”

LA Games Warning

Similarly, Trump’s response to a query about Boston veered into a parallel statement regarding the upcoming Summer Games.

“When I thought the city was not sufficiently organized, I would shift it to a different city if necessary,” Trump stated. “On that one I’d probably have to get a alternative permission, but we'd proceed.”

Official consent Trump alluded to would have to come through the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Their head, Kirsty Coventry, was elected to her post in March and has not yet meet publicly with the former president, but she indicated that she would like a meeting with Trump at a future time.

Additional Criticism

Trump also questioned Gavin Newsom’s management of recent LA wildfires, saying that a comparable scenario could cause the removal of the event.

“If the governor doesn’t play ball, we are going to have to be firm,” Trump commented.

His message was just as clear for Boston.

“Boston must improve their situation,” he remarked. “That’s all my message.”
