Space Traveler Shares Depression After Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
