The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has announced his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was poised to be among three contenders standing for Ireland's head of state, beside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, Sunday night he announced in a statement that he "committed an error that was not in keeping with my character and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I have decided to withdraw from the election for president right away and return to the arms of my family," he declared via a statement.
