India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Smog After Celebrations

On Tuesday morning citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" level.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Several parts of Delhi showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents ten times the healthy level recommended by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable standards.

Firecracker Prohibition and New Changes

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the metropolis as winter approaches.

Yet recently, the recently formed city leadership petitioned the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Implementation

To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, judicial authorities approved the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi recorded air quality spiking around midnight to some of the worst levels recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Regional Effects

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the concentration of toxic particles in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the worst readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Various Pollution Sources

This crisis in the city is resulting from a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, rural residents illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing toxic haze that becomes contained over the capital as colder air sets in.

Health and Economic Consequences

The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the capital region is substantial, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely deaths each year in the city.
