Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Responds to President Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Matches from Boston

Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, suggested that the city was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup games from Gillette Stadium, situated approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to address criticism from the Trump administration, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had warned that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "clean up its act."

A great deal of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.

She added, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... repeated warnings ... are issued at individuals and communities who stand their ground and submit or be obedient to a divisive plan."

She also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." Wu concluded by stressing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."

Trump's Statements and FIFA Involvement

Earlier this week, Infantino was seen alongside Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and presented World Cup and club championship awards to Trump as presents.

On Tuesday, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police vehicle being set on fire. He replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the head of the organization, who's phenomenal."

He added, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it without hesitation." The president also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Past Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

Trump has previously suggested that he would take the same conversation with the FIFA president about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 host cities across North America.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is planned to be played from June 11 to 19 July next summer.
