Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other marked cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report early analysis suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident left him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
